Shooters Hill - SE18
The area known as Shooters Hill is effectively sandwiched between Blackheath to the west and Welling to the east, Eltham to the south and Woolwich to the north. It allegedly gets it’s name from association with highway men who preyed on travellers between London and Dover along Watling Street (the local stretch now having been re-named Shooters Hill Road). The area around the Water Tower (below) is the highest point in London at 432 ft and offers spectacular views of the whole of London far superior to any found north of the river!
Whilst there are quiet roads of the Shooters Hill Road, they tend to be fairly steep and therefore the nervous learner will need good clutch control. More suitable roads for the beginner are not far away in Welling to the east and Kidbrooke to the west. The nearest test centres are a toss up between Hither Green, Belvedere and Bexleyheath all of which are about 10-15 minutes away by car.
