Driving lessons and prices
Your A* Driving School Instructor will tailor make a course of lessons to suit your particular requirements whether you be a brand new starter on their 17th birthday or someone who has already passed their test and just needs “refreshers”. All our Instructors are Pass Plus registered.
Typically lessons will be 60, 90 or 120 minutes in duration, however in our experience the longer lessons provide better value as the proportion of the lesson time taken up with briefing, de-briefing and booking etc is less. As for frequency, again you may wish to start at just one lesson per week or, if your test date is near, a semi-intensive course might suit you best.
Our pay as you go price is currently £24 per hour but special offers are available for payment in advance and you may be able to haggle a price as low as £22 per hour out of your instructor in certain circumstances! We would suggest however that you have one or two lessons first at the full price before committing yourself to a package of lessons.

If you are shopping around it is worth asking the following questions:
- Will my Instructor be fully qualified (A.D.I.)? Many driving schools use P.D.I.s (part qualified or trainee Instructors who have not yet passed the teaching a pupil to drive part of their professional examination)
- How long will the lessons be? Quite a few Driving Schools only offer 45 or 50 minute lessons.
- What car will I be learning in and how old is it? Does it have air-con, power assisted steering, servo assisted disc brakes, drivers and passenger’s air-bags, engine management system, accident & break-down recovery insurance?
- Is my instructor a member of any professional association such as MSA or DIA? (These associations often provide their members with professional indemnity insurance as part of the membership fee)
- How much will I have to pay for my practical test. Many driving schools charge an additional fee over and above the lesson charge using the excuse that they have to extend their insurance cover! At A* we will only charge you for a 2 hour lesson as this is the minimum amount of time that you will need for your test to allow for travelling time etc.
- Does the Driving School or Instructor have a quality assurance policy? All A* Driving School Instructors must comply with the THE A* CUSTOMER CHARTER .
We can now accept payment by credit or debit card etc. through PayPal

The “Fairy Liquid” Principle: Fairy Liquid might cost more than your super-market’s own brand but it provides much better value for money as a little Fairy Liquid goes a long way!
The phrase “less is more” applies very well to the cost of driving lessons! What we mean by this is that very often driving schools that charge less provide inferior quality tuition. You will therefore end up spending more as you will need a greater number of lessons.
